Shooting in portrait orientation with a ball head and quick release plate can be difficult with some cameras and lenses, depending on their size and weight. Even with ball heads with a high load capacity, using the portrait mode on the ball head isn't always the best option for optimum stability due to the uneven weight distribution of the camera. L brackets allow the ball head to remain in its most sturdy upright position, giving the ability to move the camera itself instead of the ball head. This allows shooting without any potential movement caused by heavy gear.
